Strengthen the church and communities to engage in promoting economic and social accountability for National development
Uganda as a country continues to encounter challenges on many socio- economic issues/ challenge that are undermining its peaceful, equitable and sustainable development. Some of these include abject poverty characterized by widening inequality based on sex, region, income and age among others), conflicts, political uncertainty, wavering level of nationalism/values and call for spiritual reflection and devotion in order to bring about positive transformation.
Under this strategic objective, the aim is to strengthen the Church to play a strategic key role in National transformation including amplifying citizen’s voices and collective action in promoting economic and social accountability in Uganda.
- Organise and hold National Prayer Days for reflection and devotion on topical issues/concerns1, national events 2 and developments as a strategy towards spiritual growth and positive transformation.
- Period Pastoral Letters on critical national issues/concerns and developments.
- Scale up civic education to promote citizen competence on rights, duties and roles to in promoting social and economic accountability including fighting corruption, building peace and positive national transformation.
Take practical steps to enhance citizens’ demand for and access to relevant public information especially on service delivery.
Develop the capacities of Caritas Uganda and sister organizations, at all levels, to empower citizens, facilitate more productive citizen-state relationships and promote social accountability approaches.
Work with other civil society organizations and state actors to expand and enhance existing government-mandated social accountability requirements and practices; such as document and disseminate examples of successful social accountability initiatives, in order to build confidence and demonstrate the benefits of such approaches
Advocate for the provision of adequate resources, training, technical assistance and follow-up to ensure that mandated social accountability practices are implemented in a meaningful and effective manner.
Promote equal opportunities for women and men, girls and boys in access to public information, voice and collective action, capacity development as well as in engagement with the state actors on promoting social and economic accountability.
1 Some of these may include prayers for peaceful political transition/change of governments, elections, in times of disasters and emergencies among others.
